2015 euRathlon challenge announced
The final euRathlon robotics competition will take place in September 2015 in Piombino, Italy. The competition is organised as part of the homonymous FP7 project, funded by the European Commission. The aim of the euRathlon project is to organise outdoor competitions that will test the intelligence and autonomous capabilities of robots in simulated scenarios inspired by the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster.
euRathlon 2015 will assess the capabilities of teams of combined terrestrial, maritime and aerial robots to work cooperatively to accomplish specific tasks. Teams of researchers, masters and PhD students, industry professionals and other stakeholders from all over the world will compete to win the cash prizes available for each category. Other attendants will be provided with the opportunity to discover the latest technological innovations in the domain of Robotics.
The challenges teams will face include:
Air trials:
A1) Aerial detection and mapping
A2) Aerial reconnaissance inside a building
Sea Trials:
S1) Navigation and environmental survey
S2) Leak localisation and valve opening/closing
Land:
L1) Reconnaissance in urban structure
L2) Mobile Manipulation (valve opening/closing)
The first euRathlon competition was took place in September 2013 in Berchtesgaden, Germany. The purpose of the 2013 competition was to test the capabilities of land-based robots, on the occasion ICARUS Consortium partners made it to the podium: SPACEAPPS came third in the ‘Mobile Manipulation for handling hazardous material’ and IMM-IAIR got the bronze medal in the ‘Reconnaissance and Surveillance of Urban Structures (USAR)’ challenge. The second edition of the contest took place at the Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) premises in La Spezia, Italy and focused on collaboration between air and maritime robots.
