EURATHLON is a new robot competition supported by the European Commission. The vision of EURATHLON is to provide real-world robotics challenges that will test the intelligence and autonomy of outdoor/off-road robots in demanding mock disaster-response scenarios. Inspired by the Fukushima disaster, it envisions a competition that requires autonomous flying, land and underwater robots acting together to survey the disaster, collect environmental data, and identify critical hazards.
This objective is very close to the validation and demonstration objectives of ICARUS, so we hope there will be a fruitful cross-fertilization between both programmes. In this context, ICARUS partner Allen Vanguard is participating to the 2013 event. EURATHLON is coordinated by Frank Schneider of Fraunhofer FKIE, a member of the ICARUS Scientific and Technical Advisory Board.
