ICARUS to co-organise the first ever European Symposium on Border Surveillance and Search and Rescue Operations Technology

KEMEA, the Greek Centre for Security Studies, together with several European Project consortia, is organising the first European Symposium on “Border Surveillance and Search and Rescue operations technology (BSSAR)”. The two-day event starts tomorrow (27^th-28^th November 2014) and will take place in Heraklion, on the island of Crete, Greece.

Members of KEMEA have been working closely with and ICARUS and other European projects to organise the event, which will feature presentations on initiatives such as PERSEUS (Protecting European Seas and Borders through the intelligent use of surveillance), DARIUS (Deployable SAR Integrated Chain with Unmanned Systems) and  BRIDGE (Bridging Resources and Agencies in large-scale Emergency Management), as well as question and answer sessions and a technology exhibition.

Researchers as well as representatives of  industry and academia in the domains of Border Surveillance and Search and Rescue (SAR) will come together in order to showcase the developments made in their projects. The event is also designed to raise awareness of the EU research community’s capabilities amongst decision-makers. Members of the Greek government, the Directorate-Generals (DGs) Enterprise and Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO) of the European Commission, the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG), UVS International and the European Organisation for Security (EOS) will participate in the symposium. BSSAR 2014 will be the perfect opportunity for such representatives to discover the latest technological developments and initiatives in the fields of Border Surveillance and SAR.

A round table is also planned, which will explore opportunities for fostering potential synergies and cooperation among the different projects, with a strong emphasis on issues such as interoperability. Bilateral meetings between stakeholders from no less than 16 different projects will take place. Poster presentations and live demonstrations of equipment will allow both user communities and policy-makers community to gain first-hand experience of how these new technologies are operated.
